Hornbeck is comparing the courtroom to a battlefield the night before battle. However, he is not looking for a strategic place to fight, but a strategic place to watch. His point is that what is to occur in the courtroom the following day was to be huge in the impact as large battle would. He wanted to record this "battle" as such to see what all was occuring, even if he was to poke fun at the whole basis of the argument.
